African Sisters of Notre Dame profess temporary vows
The
first group of African Sisters of Notre Dame made their profession of temporary
vows on October 1, 2005, the 155th anniversary of the founding of our
congregation. This event also marked
the completion of their two-year novitiate in
Njiro,
Tanzania. Two of the sisters in this group are
from Nigeria and seven are from Kenya.
Before accepting any candidates, our Indian sister missionaries to Tanzania focused on learning the culture and to establishing good relationships
with the people. Through the vocation ministry of our sisters in Tanzania,
some
young women desiring to become Sisters of Notre Dame came as candidates
in 1999.
Our sisters in Uganda accepted their first candidates
in 2002. These young women, from Northern and Central Uganda, completed their
teacher training
prior to their pre-novitiate program. Uganda, the "Pearl of Africa," has
become home to our sister missionaries there, and each one is helping
in some way to nurture the vocation of young women as we look toward
the future of
the Sisters of Notre Dame in Africa.
In October 2006, two women from Uganda, and three from Kenya, became our second
group of African sisters to
make their first vows.
The beautiful family spirit and enthusiasm that prevail among these
women hold much hope for spreading our mission in Africa.
