The four US provinces of the Sisters of Notre Dame began offering a volunteer service program for single women, ages 18–40, in the summer of 2005. The program, called “Stretch Your Heart,” is a response to the suggestion of the Third Continental Congress on Vocations that communities invite young people to enter into service with them and reflect prayerfully on their experience as a “privileged place of God’s self-revelation.” The key components of the service program are outreach to those in need, personal and communal prayer, and sharing community life with the sisters. The program was offered in 2004 by three of the US provinces and was a valuable experience for the women who participated.

Volunteer experiences have included: outreach to women and children in transition, services to refugees, GED tutoring (for high school graduate equivalency degree), serving at hunger centers and soup kitchens, migrant ministry, Bible camp, elder care, care for children whose families are facing crises, and Habitat for Humanity projects.
