Children’s home feeds hungry mouths, minds, and hearts

photo: SND caring for small children at the children's home in Brazil, where they receive food, educational help, and a chance to play in a secure environmentAt the children's home in Iraí, Brazil, our sisters look after poor and needy babies and children (up to 14 years of age) who do not have a safe place to stay while their parents are working outside the home or are unemployed. One hundred forty-five children receive food, informal education and help in their homework at the children’s home. Those who are school age attend government schools and come to our children’s home after school. They also participate in cooking, handcrafts, sports, computer and typing lessons. The little ones are cared for the whole day.

The children love coming to the home because there they get food, they can have a bath, they are able to play, laugh, make friends and they are respected in their needs. In addition, they receive tutoring that supplements their school studies. There are cases in which the children do not want to go home in the evening and become frightened before they leave due to the reality they will face at home: lack of food, a drunk father, a nervous mother upset because she still can´t find a job, parents fighting, babies crying with hunger, the whole family trying to sleep in a single crowded bed. This atmosphere of commotion, stress and disorder at home makes the children´s home a place of safety and security where the children can experience the wholeness, nurturing and peace that they so desperately need.
