About us:
In 1888 after the Kulturkampf had ended, the Sisters of Notre Dame were able
to return to Prussia in Germany. Because their first motherhouse in Coesfeld
had been turned into a hospital, they found a new place in the lower Rhine
area, in a village called Mülhausen. The purchase of a single house,
the “Villa Bongartz,” led within a few years to a complex that
included the motherhouse of the congregation, a large school, a boarding
school and a spacious health care center for the sick and elderly sisters.
In 1947 when the motherhouse was transferred to Rome, Mülhausen continued
as home to the German province of the Sisters of Notre Dame. After the formation
of the Coesfeld and Vechta provinces in Germany, Mülhausen remained
a province in the Rhine area. Today the sisters serve in various ministries
according to the needs of the times.
Ministries include:
- Care of elderly
- Communications
- Education
- Formation for religious life
- Mission work in Uganda
- Nursing
- Pastoral ministry
- Social work
- Vocation awareness programs
