Food Drive to Celebrate Catholic Sisters Week

Catholic Sisters Week in the United States is nationally recognized annually on March 8-14^th. To celebrate, the Sisters of Notre Dame in Toledo hosted “Stuff the Truck”, a food drive to support the Toledo SeaGate Food Bank, on Friday, March 11, from 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. at Walt Churchill’s Market in Maumee, Ohio.

This was the second year the Sisters of Notre Dame have hosted a food drive for Toledo SeaGate Food Bank. The Mission of SeaGate Food Bank is to enhance the quality of life in Northwest Ohio by relentlessly working to eliminate hunger and improve nutrition. Since food is not the only need, they also develop and implement programs to educate, train, support and encourage the underserved in our community.

Event organizer, Sister Sally Marie Bohnett, said, “We hope to not only serve persons in need, but also bring much-needed awareness to the current increase in food insecurity and the underlying causes, such as the COVID-19 Pandemic, poverty, unemployment/under-employment, and inconsistent access to healthy food.”

The Sisters of Notre Dame were joined in prayer and by volunteers from Sisters of St. Francis-Sylvania, Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of the Visitation, and Ursuline Sisters. Students from Notre Dame Academy, St. John High School, and Mercy College in Toledo assisted by lifting and carrying food items from the cars to the truck while the Sisters greeted the donors and thanked them for their generosity. At total of 12,001 pounds of food were collected throughout the week.
