Since 2022, Notre Dame Ipanema School in Rio de Janeiro, has been developing a transdisciplinary curriculum called “A Dive into the Ocean” under the guidance of Mr. Ricardo Gomes, founder of the Instituto Mar Urbano (Urban Ocean Institute), an NGO recognized by the UN. The program aims to promote socio-environmentally responsible actions. It is aligned with the 14th UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) – Life below water: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources as well as with the Encyclical Letter Laudato Sì, the Brazilian National Educational Curriculum and the Notre Dame Educational principle: “To educate citizens committed to caring for the planet, for others and for themselves.”

In 2023, the program achieved international recognition when it received the Blue School Stamp from UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural agency, as part of an initiative to protect the Atlantic Ocean. The award, which is recognized both in Brazil and Portugal, was the crowning achievement of Notre Dame Ipanema School’s commitment to integrate the oceanic culture into the various educational activities conducted by the school.

With the program “A Dive into the Ocean”, Notre Dame Ipanema School has emerged as a “beam of light” to inspire and raise awareness in both society and the field of business of the need to bring about the changes necessary to preserve the ocean’s health. In addition, the direct involvement of students in an educational journey that transcends the classroom and directly connects with the importance of the oceans is an important means of raising awareness that water is intrinsic to life on Earth. Moreover, it stresses the urgent need to take an active part in efforts to prevent and reduce all kinds of pollutants in our world.
